Official launch of the ATHENA project at CEA INES – Bourget du Lac !

On 30 September 2025, the CEA had the pleasure of hosting the kick-off meeting for the ATHENA project, an ambitious project that aims to tackle a major challenge: sustainable cooling for the decarbonisation of industry.
Faced with a global increase in demand for air conditioning, electricity consumption and CO2 emissions continue to rise. ATHENA offers a promising alternative: an ammonia/water absorption chiller enhanced by the integration of an innovative ejector, increasing performance even in hot environments, in order to better adapt to climate change.
This project aims to develop a high-performance prototype (5-10 kWth) with a TRL4 maturity level, paving the way for more efficient and environmentally friendly cooling solutions using renewable or waste heat sources.
